Roberta Donnan Remembers - Page 7
Roberta Donnan continues..... "One indelible memory happened to me in about 1943-4. I was walking with my father in a field when a lone low flying German aircraft flew overhead, and began circling above us menacingly. My father threw me down on the grass and laid himself on top of me and prayed. I can still hear the sounds of machine gun fire. This seemed to go on for some minutes, till I suppose the ammunition ran out. Then the plane droned off. It happened in those days that enemy aircraft returning home after a raid on say London, always tried to use up any remaining missiles on board."
"I recall another incident which happened on the way to Canvey and must have been a hazard to the island. We were on a train going towards Benfleet, the carriage was full of sailors and young men in service uniform. Suddenly the night sky was lit up with a terrifying red and yellow glow - the oil refinery had been bombed. I remember my father lifting me up to look out of the window of the slowing train." |
