1950's: Roberta outside the Lobster Smack Inn

Roberta Donnan continues.....

"I have a picture of myself outside The Lobster Smack in about 1955 (above). I recall drinking ginger beer from a bottle with a glass stopper inside, which I found quaint and old fashioned. My father told me the inn was quite famous as Charles Dickens had written about it. He was always keen on the history of the island, and how the Dutch engineers had drained the land and he drew both the Dutch cottages.

Much of the island was farmland, the hay yield always seemed high to us visitors and there were many horses to talk to and admire along our walks and sheep and cows too."

"I was amazed at the web site, and especially enjoyed looking at the then and now pictures. It is really commendable how the two have been matched up - a lot of loving and painstaking work has gone into preserving often fragile records of what was a completely different world and way of life. If this is your work, thank you very much for your skill, thought and time. I for one appreciated it all very much."
