Memories of a 12 year old in the Canvey Island Floods 1953 - Part 7

"The coalman who had a horse and cart told us that many animals, including cows, sheep and horses had drowned."

"The coalman who helped clear the dead cows and sheep: taken in Baardwyke Ave outside our bungalow where we moved a year or two after the floods. (Facing from our garden). Chapman Road was unmade and there was no traffic or road signs."

"Some plants in the garden died while others flourished in the sea water. I noticed a carnation really thrived afterwards. The Red Cow Public House was renamed - The King Canute. Apparently it had been headquarters for relief work and 500,000 sandbags were filled there."
