The first year the application was refused, the second time of application it was refused. Not to be beaten he applied for the third time, this time following advice that a hotel would sound better than public house applied under the name Hotel Monico. . One strong objection was from Charringtons, "What makes you think you could run a hotel?" AHB replied " Having stayed in hotels all over the country, if I couldn't run a hotel better than any of them I wouldn't apply for a licence". The licence was finally granted in 1938
