1952: Relaxing possibly in the garden of Weel Cottage off Weel Road, Leigh Beck

Roberta Donnan continues.....

"Wheel Cottage was one of 2 bungalows set in a large garden. There were two entrances to the properties, one entrance marked Wheel Cottage, the other Weel Cottage. One entrance was certainly off Weel Road."

Letter sent to Roberta's Mum (then Miss Peacock) at Canvey from her Dad (Robert Plaster) in 1937: The address reads Miss A.Peacock "Oso-Kosi", Near St Annes Church, Morbotton Avenue (Now St Annes Road), Leigh Beck, Canvey Island.

"My family preferred to stay in the Leigh Beck area of the island, and often rented a bungalow named OSO-KOSI (or OSOCOSI) from a Mrs. Ashford. She was a charming lady and told us she was from India . Eventually she and her husband sold OSO-KOSI and moved to Leigh on Sea. I remember when it was on the market she had notes positioned at strategic points around the bungalow to remind her husband what to say to a prospective buyer should she be out ! One said "say garden all round" and another "say two gas stoves !". Her daughter was called Olive and was extremely beautiful. A letter (above) sent to my mother at this bungalow dated 1937 is addressed to "Oso-Kosi" near St. Anne's Church Leigh Beck. My dad then single had written to my Mother, Alice Peacock while she was on holiday at Canvey with her parents (my grandad Will Peacock) then came down post haste to see her !!!"

"I do remember the concrete barge on the Point!! It looks much larger from your picture on the web site, and is taken from an unusual angle. However, I confirm that there certainly WAS a concrete hulk on the Point, with a sort of broken superstructure, with writing on it. In my childhood it was something like "ACHTUNG" and so I always thought of this hulk as that of a U Boat ! Sorry. Somewhere there is a photo of me sitting in this concrete hulk."
