William "Bill" Sparks

Postby janp » Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:30 pm

Does anyone remember William "Bill" Sparks who was awarded the DSM for his involvement in "Operation Franklin" in WW2. He was a "Cockleshell Hero". If you type Cockershell Heroes in google you can read all about him and the Operation.

He was born in 1922 in London and lived on Canvey probably during the 70/80s eventually moving to Alfriston in Essex where he died in 2002.
We are trying to find out when and where he lived on Canvey.

Thanks to the Evening Echo's article http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/local_news/castlepoint/9509668.Hunt_for_home_of_Cockleshell_Hero/ we now have Bill Sparks' addresses and the years he lived on Canvey. We also have contact with the family.
We have now put a category on the archive about Bill, Operation Frankton and our efforts to get a memorial to his memory based on Canvey Island.
If you want to follow our progress this is the place to watch http://www.canveyisland.org/category_id__184.aspx

It is the 70th anniversary of the Operation this December and it is hoped we can get something in place to mark the anniversary
