Memories of a 12 year old in the Canvey Island Floods 1953 - Part 2

"The first thing we knew about the floods was when a local fisherman knocked at our door at 8 am on Sunday 1st February. He asked to speak to my Dad. My parents were still in bed so I showed him into their bedroom as it seemed to be urgent. He told us that there was a breach in the sea wall and some houses were flooded and we had better take blankets onto the sea wall as it was the highest point, to evade the water."

"The tide was still coming in. We begun to put our belongings up high, on tops of cupboards or anywhere we thought would be out of reach of the water. My Dad went to see if his business was safe. He had a contract to Ford to make their tool bags out of Hessian and had it stored a few miles away. He used to cut them out and had outworkers to machine them. But on the way he found that people were being evacuated on army lorries from the bus stop known as The Point."
